Extreme long range hunting

Postby trazman » Sun Jul 26, 2015 8:08 am

What is the distance that you would consider a shot on a live animal an extreme long range shot? I know it depends on animal size and caliber, but I want to open another subforum under Long range hunting forum where we would discuss about extreme long range hunting...

Well I hunt mostly roe deers and I think that 500m+ is extreme long range for such a small animal. However my skills are not really perfect so a rarely shoot past 400m. I hope to improve that...

for me 500+ is extreme as I didn't hunt yet at that distance, but I consider myself a novice. So in a year or so ... I might change my opinion on this.

Extreme long range depends mostly on condition in what you shooting. I have ben succesfully shoot white tail deer from 350 to 926 yards. But sometimes 350 yards seems as extreme long range hunting because of weather conditions.

1000+ is getting there I think. Not out of the question but you need to put a bit of time in over your rifle to be consistent.

In the US for high power rifles, short range is defined as 200 and 300 yards, mid range is 400, 500, and 600 yards, long range is 700, 800, 900 and 1,000 yards so I guess Extreme Long Range starts at 1,000.001 yards :) . Seriously, I think it is much different for hunting and even 600 yards is extreme in many field conditions. It can be easy or hard depending upon a lot of factors, is the animal alert, do you have a rock solid position that will allow the gun to recoil in and exact straight line, is there wind, mirage, fog, uphill or downhill angle and so on. All of these factor in and could make it a chip shot or one that requires significant expertise.

Time of flight/animal movement/weather is what it comes down to . what is the animal doing..bedded down and stationary vs up and mobile, big tof and that animal takes a step, you have gutted it and spoiled meat and inflicted needless pain, stationary animal low wind...you can really stretch it and still be ethical .time over your rifle to know you and your rifles capabilities is key to making these decisions.whats elr for one man in one situation is not so for another
