Load development .338 Lapua magnum 300gr Nosler Custom Sompetition

Postby trazman » Mon Jul 25, 2016 11:18 am

I went to the shooting range today to test my first loads. I started as always with the pressure test. I use Thun brass, CCI 250 LRM primers and Vihtavuori N170 powder. COAL was 93,6mm

I started really low with 76gr of powder and at 88gr there were just slight pressure signs and at 90gr obvious pressure signs.

Velocity in m/s was:
76 695
78 708
80 723
82 751
84 757
86 782
88 799
90 818

You can see an approx. 20m/s increase in velocity/2gr of powder however there is a really small increase between 82 and 84gr of only 6m/s. This might be just a consequence but it could also be a good point to check the accuracy and ES, SD...

I will go again tomorrow to make the seating depth test and report back.

I have done today the seating depth test. And I got quite good info.

I loaded 3 different seating depths. 93,6mm; 92,6mm; 91,6mm

I was shooting at 110m. You can see the results below.

The velocities were:

93,6mm 762; 752; 752; 763;
92,6mm 756; 762; 763; 754;
91,6mm 748; 762; 748; 763;
SD for all shots is 6,4m/s which is not bad at this point...

So my load development is finished. I was on the range 4 times this week. I shoot thru the barrel 63 rounds and I am satisfied with the load.

The final load that I have now is with 85gr of Vihtavuori N170 powder and velocity is 765m/s. I have to say that I was hoping for a faster load, however the ladder test said that this load is optimal. Grouping is from 2/3-3/4 MOA and ES is 2m/s...

I will use this load for now and later when I will be able to get the Vihtavuori N570 Powder I will try to develop a faster load.
